Life as an Intern at Top Draw

123 I recently finished my third year of the Bachelor of Communication Studies program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. I’m majoring in professional communication, and after coming to the sudden and terrifying realization that I only have a year of post-secondary left, I thought that maybe I should start professionally communicating. I went through a gruesome process of what felt like 83 interviews (give or take), and ended up turning down three jobs because they actually weren’t what I was looking for at all. After giving up and embracing the idea of doing nothing all summer, I came across a job posting for an online marketing intern position at Top Draw Inc., and since I’m aiming to go into marketing and communications when I graduate, I applied for kicks. Almost a month later, I’ve survived my first week here at Top Draw. Let me tell you, I was nervous. I was beyond nervous actually; this is my first ever full-time job and the moment that I accepted the position, I was scared that I had just sold my soul for the summer. While from some angles that may be viewed as the case, I couldn’t have asked for a better devil than Top Draw. The main reason that I turned down the positions I had been offered was the fact that I wouldn’t really be getting a lot of experience related to my education. You’d be surprised how many “communications” summer job openings there are that pretty much fully entail administrative work and coffee runs. While I have made a few pots of coffee during my time here so far (and completely butchered some), I’ve already gained a lot of knowledge that will actually be applicable to future jobs when I graduate. I’ve had the chance to collaborate and work on implementing a social media strategy. I’ve learned a lot about search engine optimization including keyword research, which is something I didn’t even know existed. I’ve learned quite a bit about Google Analytics, including how to pull data and generate monthly reports for clients. I’ve had the chance to have a go at some content writing for the Top Draw website, and I’ve written a few blog posts for our clients’ websites. I’ve helped fix and optimize companies’ Google+ pages, and I’ve proofread documents and websites about to be launched. I get to sit in on weekly meetings going over analytics and analyzing campaigns that have been launched (mind you, most of the conversations are way over my head, but I’m happy to be there anyway). This is all just within five days of working here, and since Top Draw is an official Google Partner, I’m aiming at getting my Google Adwords Certification by the end of the summer. What’s even more impressive and unique than the workload is the people I work with and the environment I work in. First and foremost, there’s a full-body iComfort massage chair in the lounge. So realistically, what more could I ask for? There’s a plethora of snacks and pop in case I get the munchies while getting a massage, which happens to the best of us. Everyone’s so welcoming and friendly here – my bosses and coworkers even took me out for Pho on my first day (I’m still not entirely sure what that is). I also got a gift along with a card that everyone signed welcoming me to the team. I work with people who actually share similar interests with me, like Lord of the Rings and The Walking Dead. Gone are the days when I have to pretend that I know what a rave is just to get in on the conversation with coworkers. Our daily huddles are always wrapped up with our battle cry of For the Win!, and help is always a click or a step away if I need it. It’s the most positive and energetic environment I’ve worked in, and I’ve had my fair share of jobs. It’s only been a week, and I already love it. I can’t wait for what the rest of the summer has in store for me here, and I already know that I’ll be sad to leave at the end of my internship. I’ve been given an amazing opportunity that will give me great skills and work experience, and I consider myself extremely lucky. For the Win! _20140710_105228
